Diode

A diode is a semiconductor device with one N-Type and one P-Type material joined together which allows current flow in one direction only. It can be compared to a check valve which permits a fluid to pass in one direction an stops it in the other. The most common place that the automotive technician will find the use of diodes is in the alternator to rectify or change the AC voltage into DC voltage. A diode is also
used in the alternator to prevent the battery from discharging back through the windings in the alternator.
